Distributors Take on Digital Kanban
Manufacturing journalist, Thomas R. Cutler, authored a featured article titled, “Distributors should look to digital Kanban” in the July issue of Industrial Distribution. According to Cutler, “Distributors must continually innovate to maximize productivity and reduce total costs. Initiatives of process improvement and waste reduction can result in cost-saving efficiency. Productivity is output, efficiency and production. Waste is identified in many ways, yet ultimately it is any activity that requires allocated resources but adds no value from the customer’s perspective. Some activities, while not directly adding value to a product or process (such as time spent on equipment maintenance or an accounting function) are necessary and must be perpetuated. But non-value-added activities must be constantly reevaluated and, if necessary, identified as waste and eliminated.”
For example, many distributors still maintain inventories of a million plus items. Even with extensive networks of distribution centers to ensure prompt and reliable deliveries to their customers, their success is still not guaranteed. Despite long-standing relationships with thousands of manufacturers, many distributors lack an integrated approach. This costs customers time and money.
Purchasing organizations wrongly assume that “just-in-case” inventories are less costly than the cost of downtime or lost production. Preparing for an emergency or downtime situation usually creates inventories of items Never Used. Your lean procurement activities must be directly related to production, otherwise they become waste themselves. Many organizations implement lean strategic sourcing initiatives, yet still find that nearly half their purchases are spot buys or unplanned.
A key component to a lean initiative is the use of Kanban, the “pull” method of keeping production lines suitably stocked with inventory that’s available when needed and in the correct quantity. Kanban is the signal needed for inventory replenishment, and as a product is consumed, an order for the utilized inventory is automatically placed. Digital kanban is the leanest methodology for a demand-driven supply chain.
Supplier consolidation can lower costs and improve productivity, but only if there is a complete understanding of the customers’ needs and goods. According to Stephen Parker, CEO of North Carolina-based Datacraft Solutions, “The reduction of waste associated with rarely used items in inventory allows distributors to focus on core competencies. No time should be wasted sourcing and procuring infrequently used items. Digital Kanban re-orders, based only on actual consumption, are electronically communicated during each phase of replenishment.”
Daily Demand Import Interface (DDII) provides alternative sources for inputs necessary to derive optimal inventory levels for large numbers of parts or card sets within the existing product base. Using a DDII tool allows distributors to quickly and easily upload average daily demand data and reset the calculation.
DDII Web applications have three major components: Import Demand, Calculation Reports and Print Cards.
• Import Demand: Allows distributors to modify and upload new card set information into a pull-based Kanban solution. Users must be able to download current card set information and make changes (such as minimum reorder quantities and delivery schedules).
• Calculation Reports: The “calculation reports” interface must provide users with the ability to see all uploaded and processed demand data. The data is then processed and validated; valid data is accepted and any errors are flagged for users to review, correct and resubmit.
• Print Cards: The “print cards” component enables users to print new cards for any card-sets modified during a DDII session.
“In many organizations the groundwork for what needs to be built, in what quantities and by when, has already been analyzed,” says Parker. “This new approach…provides the ability to upload/import data…to accommodate defined or changing schedules.”
Demand-driven replenishment creates a tier of distribution and supplier networks. While forecasts may prove helpful in predicting “big-picture” demand, more often than not they are poor indicators of the precise products that will be needed.
Lean procurement today requires digital Kanban because it is ultimately a demand-driven, lean optimization tool that allows for both flexibility and responsiveness, thereby eliminating waste, increasing productivity, and holding to the cardinal rule of continued process improvement.

LCD Screens Transforming Digital Signage and Advertising in Restaurants and Retail Stores
It is not hard to understand why LCD displays screens are rapidly being adopted by retail stores and restaurants. InfoTrends conducted a digital signage study where they polled consumers and found that "digital signage displays have a 47.7% effectiveness on brand awareness, increase the average purchase amount by 29.5%, create a 31.8% upswing in overall sales volumes, generate a 32.8% growth in repeat buyers and generate 32.8% more in-store traffic". Lcd Display screens are being used by restaurants for displaying the menu and entertainment, by garment and clothing retail stores to show videos of fashion shows and to showcase various products, and by automobile dealers as video walls to provide the feel of the car on the road and to keep the customer occupied as they wait for sales agent or other people.
LCD Display Usage in Restaurants: When visiting KFC Hyderabad (India), what grabs your attention is not so much the smell of food but the vibrant colours of the four 42-inch LCD display panels which serves as the overhead menu board. KFC Hyderabad sought the help of Sharp Business Systems India (http://www.sbsil.com) to set up the digital signage solution. LCD digital menus can be maintained from a remote central location or a local PC set up in the store. The benefit of remote central management is that menu, promotions, video, pricing and other items displayed on the LCD displays in the retail outlet can be managed from one central location to provide consistency and to make sure that the changes are made consistently across all stores at the same time. Consumers receive dynamic previews of the offering with potential for positive impact on sales. If restaurants have the networked point-of-sale cash registers collecting time based purchased data, marketing can get instantaneous feedback on how different promotions and pricing are having impact on sales. Restaurants are also using LCD displays as televisions to spruce up the restaurant atmosphere. It is now a common expectation to have LCD TVs in restaurants that show the local sports or the news.
LCD Display Usage in Showrooms: Whether it is women clothing store, automobile showroom, convenient store or a department store, LCD displays are appearing in all these locations. A typical store has up to four LCD displays per site. InfoTrends study showed that business that had installed displays in their showroom, predominantly expected the display usage in their showrooms to increase. To grab and hold consumer attention, retailers are using LCD displays in a video-wall format or in a daisy chain format along with stand alone units. The content could be a mixture of video along with text or a combination. The goal is to target specific customers with specific information and this information may change with the time of the day - creating a retail company-owned, closed-circuit television network that runs nothing but the retail company programming.
Why do Retail Businesses Select LCD Displays vs. Plasma Displays? There are a number of reasons why retailers and restaurants are selecting LCD display over plasma displays.
· Fan-less Architecture of LCDs: LCD displays do not have a fan potentially resulting in less noise and distraction. This is less of an issue with newer higher end plasma displays, however it is worthwhile to keep track as you evaluate the two options.
· Rugged Design of LCDs: LCD displays are closed-box units and more rugged. There is less chance of oil fumes, dust or other elements getting into the unit and reducing the life of the unit.
· Resolution and Picture Quality: (A) Video resolution on LCD displays and plasma display are comparable but computer data is better observed on LCD displays. (B) LCDs are better to view in ambient light or in brightly lit rooms. As businesses usually work during the day in ambient light, LCDs are more desirable for most business applications. (C) Plasma manufacturers have made much of their viewing angles. However with new LCDs the view angles are 176°. There is not much difference between the two technologies in viewing angle. (D) There have been concerns with burn-in for Plasma screens especially for static images. However, many Plasma manufacturers have improved their anti-burn in technology. There are no burn-in issues with LCD screens.
· Life of the Display Unit: LCDs can be operated 24x7 for 50,000+ hours equivalent to 5+ years of continuous viewing. Plasma, on the other hand, typically has a half life of 30,000 hours. At half life, the phosphors in a plasma screen will glow half as brightly as they did when the set was new. There is no way to replace these gases; the display simply continues to become dimmer with use. An LCD TV will last as long as its backlight - and in many models the backlight bulbs can be easily replaced!
· Power Consumption: Plasma TVs use more power than LCD - twice as much Technology for both plasma and LCD display continues to change. Be sure to check updates to the technology for apple to apple comparison

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Tinnitus - Rhythmic Humming in the Ear
Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Tinnitus
One of the many unusual sounds a person can right here are tinnitus sounds. These are extremely annoying, and what's worse is which there are several types of ringing in the ears - or tinnitus. One type involves noise being created inside the ear in a rhythmic fashion, like a heartbeat. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Tinnitus
This is called pulsating tinnitus (or pulsatile tinnitus). With this, a occupant experiences sensations in the ear that have the same tempo as a heartbeat. Pulsating tinnitus is widely considered a very uncommon type of sensation in the ear the current is lead to by blood gentle in veins and arteries and other smaller vessels in the neck, skull, and ear. While the performs not occur that often, it can often be a symptom of more dangerous ailments and has to be examined by a doctor immediately. If you have these kinds of symptoms or experience experienced this, go see a doctor without delay.
Common causes of tinnitus include hypertension, globe-shaped tumors, heart murmur, abrupt changes in blood flow in arteries and veins. Another major reason is also Eustachian tube disorder. If this worries you, protect yourself now by reading the facts given below -
• Chronic infection and irritated tissue in the middle ear is linked to tinnitus in rhythm with the heartbeat. This always coincides with an increased bloodflow to the ear tissue. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Tinnitus
• Eustachian tube dysfunction leads to pulsating tinnitus, and is caused when tubes open and close as one chews, swallows, yawns, or speaks. But due to many reasons, like sinuses, colds, coughing, allergies and excessive earwax, these tubes become blocked. This stresses the eardrum and leads to tinnitus that goes along with your heartbeart. This is very aggravating, as you can imagine!
• Discharge in the middle ear is another frequent cause of tinnitus. Diffusion of liquid in the middle ear is frequently caused by inflammation and infection in this part of the hearing system inside the human ear.
• Humming can also be caused by abrupt changes in veins. A change in your physical well-being can lead to this alteration in your arteries and veins in your neck, skull, and vessels. The veins in question are called jugular veins - which transmit blood from the brain to the heart. If alteration affects these veins, ringing problems in the ear can result. These conditions frequently occur during pregnancy. Pulsating tinnitus may be uncommon, but it can be treated effectively. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Tinnitus
This condition often pops up as a chronic symptom, so medical attention should be sought as soon as possible. If you ignore it, pulsating tinnitus doesn't go away on its own. Therefore it is crucial that you seek medical attention right away before it gets worse. Suffering from Tinnitus and Ringing in Ear? How do you connect this macro ring/exstention tube to my Nikon D60!!!!!! (link provided)?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/MACRO-EXTENSION-TUBES-NIKON-Adaptor/dp/B001CWVHTI
please, tell me how, very simply, because no matter how much light i use, its very very dark
most of the time it says lens not attached
and most of the time the lens just attaches upside down ffs. what the hell, i didnt come with bloody instructions
i will very much love anyone who helps me out here.
One of the drawbacks of buying extension tubes rather than a macro lens is loss of light.
As to it saying the lens is not attached: even on the Amazon listing it quite clearly tells you that "There is NO electronic connection between the body and the lens".
I bought the more expensive Kenko extension tubes and they DO let the lens and camera communicate - yours don't.
