Radioactive decay and Nuclear fission?
First of all, why do elements decay?
Which elements can form nuclear fission reactions from neutron bombardment?
Is it possible for elements to decay into more than one element? And what determines if it will, and which ones it will?
Do all elements decay?
On my periodic table (Sargent-Welch, VWR international), there are a list of radioactive isotopes, with their half-lives and their types of decay. If it lists more than one type, does that mean the element can decay in more than one way, or does it do all of it simultaneously?
For example, Na-22 is positron and electron capture.
How do we know when elements will emit gamma rays when they decay?
NOTE: these are not homework questions. They are just some questions I have about my chemistry unit on nuclear stuff. So please don't start yelling at me about not doing my own homework.
take quantum physics and you will find out the real answer!
however simply put elements are composed of protons and neutrons and electrons which in like to be in certain configurations, to get to these configarations they give out protons, electrons and neutrons. in some cases they are in excited states and give out photons or kick out a electron. some elements decay, carbon 6 has infinite half life meaning it will not decay "practically"
example: U235 is an isotope of Uranium, if you hit that with a neutron of "certain energy" (that energy has to do with the nuclear force of the configuration of the nuetrons and protons in the uranium atom), it will become U236 which is unstable and it will go through fission, splliting in two halves and turn it to two heavy elements (atomic number 50-70) those isotopes will decay to another ones and then another ones (over 100 isotope will exist at some point in a nuclear reaction) untill they will reach an stable configuration.
so yes, radioactive elements or unstable isotopes can decay to other elements o isotopes through electron capture, beta - or + decay, alphy decay or gamma ray emission,
How do we know that, experiments, you can't really calculate this stuff accurately, Currently all mathematicall models to describe the behavior of atoms in decay are related the experimental results.
sorry about my bad grammer and typos

Biological Research Microscope

For young children, a Stereo Microscope is one of the most useful gifts you can provide them with to nurture their curiosity and creativity. Usually, it is of lower power than a Compound Microscope with magnification levels at approximately 10X-40X. And as children can study whole albeit small objects like flowers, insects and rocks as well as Prepared Slides under it, they will have fun with the device.
However, children being what they are, you will need to supervise their activities with the microscope. This will ensure their safety and prolong the life of the equipment.
Set-Up
First and foremost, make sure that the microscope is placed on a flat surface, preferably a tabletop, with plenty of room for working purposes. It must be within easy reach of the person using it whilst still securely within the working area's perimeter. You don't want your expensive stereo microscope shattering at your feet, do you?
Second, ensure that you plug the microscope into the appropriate outlet. Just follow specification on this matter to avoid mishaps. Plus, make sure that excess cord is safely positioned - think hidden - such that no one will trip on it.
Third, use either the bottom lighting or top lighting of the stereo microscope to have the best view of the target. For opaque objects, use top lighting while transparent objects mounted on slides view best in bottom lighting.
Now that you have properly set up your microscope and work station, it's time to let your kids enjoy the show.
Use
When placing your specimen under the stereo microscope, use the stage clips when and where necessary. For example, specimens that curl up at the side can be studied better when it lies flat upon the stage.
However, if your specimen is considerably larger than the stage, it's a good idea to unclip the stage clips. This way, you have more room to work with the specimen under study.
When focusing, you can either turn the focus knob or turn the specimen. The trick is in making sure that the specimen is directly under the Objective Lens. Plus, be sure to focus as slowly as possible to avoid eye strain.
For small children, you have to supervise them by looking at the eyepiece once in a while. You have to guide them, too, in using the equipment as sudden turns can affect the device's future performance.
Maintenance
As soon as you are finished using the stereo microscope, you have to turn off the switch, remove the target/specimen, unplug the power cord, and then cover it with its Dust Cover. All these precautions are necessary to prevent the microscope from faster wear and tear.
And you don't use just about any cleaning solvent on your microscope either! For the body, use a soft dry cloth to wipe away the dust on the exterior while a non-solvent cleaning solution is best for the lenses' exterior side and a bulb-type duster for its interior side.
In all these activities, keep in mind that a stereo microscope is a delicate and dear piece of equipment in more ways than one. As such, care must be exercised when using and maintaining it. This way, you and your children can enjoy many more adventures in the world of microscopy!

Hydroponics Lab

Nothing says home like flower gardens. Whether you prefer roses, wild-flowers, or ornamental grasses, flower beds pull a property's appearance together and add that special touch of home. However, many individuals make a mistake by rushing into a flower garden. The key to a garden that will be around for years to come is to do research on your area, and to learn what kind of growing soil you have on your property.
The type of soil you have is a very important factor on how you will go about preparing your gardening beds for planting. Soils in different regions do vary. Some soils are very dry. Others are nutrient poor, sandy, have heavy clay, and some are even rocky. Thankfully, most soils fall somewhere within this wide range. Still, no soil is perfect and much can be done to improve it.
Before you start digging and planting your flower beds, the first order of business is to have your soil tested. This is the only way to know the true composition of your soil. You can have your soil tested at a lab that does soil testing in your area. They can be located by doing a search on the Internet, or looking in your local telephone book.
Proper soil samples should be taken from where you will have the center of the bed, and from both ends of the bed. You will want to acquire a tablespoon size sample from each area. The samples should be taken from a depth of five to six inches from the soil's surface. Once you have all three samples, you should thoroughly mix them together in a container.
You will want to ask to have a complete soil test performed on your sample. This will include a pH test. This will read the alkalinity and acidity of your soil. You will want a result somewhere in the range of 6.0 and 7.0. If you have a reading that is lower than 6.0, this means your soil has too much acid. To correct this problem, you can add ground limestone to the bed soil. A reading of more than 7.0 indicates that your soil is too alkaline. This can be corrected by adding powdered sulphur to your soil.
Your soil test will also tell you if there is a deficiency of nutrients in your soil. If the test result comes back that there is a deficiency in a particular nutrient, simply take the necessary steps to add this nutrient back to the soil. Along with information about your soil's pH and nutrient value, you will be given information on how much organic matter is in your soil. This is important information. This will let you know if your soil needs an organic matter supplement.
You should keep in mind that adjusting the pH, nutrient value and organic matter in your growing soil will do little to change its consistency. To improve the texture of your growing soil, you will need to add soil conditioners to the growing area. Many individuals are familiar with conditioners, yet they may have never thought of them as conditioners. Soil conditioners can include manure, peat moss, sand, vermiculite, and compost.
Once your soil is in proper condition, you are ready for the two-week waiting period. This is key, as during this time is when you should turn your soil's top surface every three days. This works any weed seedlings to the surface and gives them a chance to sprout. Once they sprout, your turning of the dirt's surface will expose their roots and dry them out. Between ten and fourteen days, the top layer of your soil should be free from weed seedlings, however keep in mind that they may make their way to the surface once you start your actual planting. Be mindful of the weed sprouts, and pull them out by hand if you want. However, don't spray them with any chemicals until your seedlings are firmly rooted and are at least three to four inches tall.
Many individuals simply do not have any soil to work with. These individuals may live in a very rocky, sandy or barren environment. For individuals who have virtually no growing soil on their properties, they may want to consider making raised beds. These beds can be filled in with soil that is brought to the site from elsewhere. If that is not an option, home owners can simply do container gardening. A container garden is fast becoming the choice of many who live in dry, sandy regions.
No matter where you live, you can incorporate flower beds into your landscape with a little forethought and research. Make sure your soil is healthy, choose plants and flowers that work for your region and get on the offense with weeds. Those three tips will keep your garden growing for years to come.

Science lab help??? Growing garlic?
In this lab, I am growing garlic using hydroponics. The goal is to get the most and/ or longest roots. What solutions, fertilizers, etc can help this happen? Thanks
give them good sunlight really is the best thing, it provides most of the nutrients, but make sure to take them out of the sun occasionally. hope this helps.

Improve Confindence in Your Golf Game
Copyright (c) 2009 Scott Cole
A golf student of mind recently asked me about subscribing to an online newsletter that provides mental golf tips. Do to the popularity of the game, there is now a lot of material dealing with the mental aspect of the game.
However, not once have I ever heard of a top player, and I mean a top player such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, ever employ the services of a sports psychologist or mental coach. What a lot of these mental coaches do, however, is imply that they know the mental secrets of Nicklaus and Woods, as if the average golfer can apply them to their own game.
Whenever I have heard of any Tour player employ the services of a sports psychologist, that golfer is usually someone who is desperate to find the answers as to why they can't win more golf tournaments. In my view, the answer to that question is simple: they are not mentally tough enough because they don't have enough confidence in their own abilities.
Confidence in your abilities is the biggest key to being able to perform under pressure. However, confidence does not just appear in your game over night. It appears after a lot of hard work on your game AND by playing a lot of golf!
I just viewed a video of Lee Trevino. He said "....you won't learn much from me...I never had a mental approach. I got my confidence from hard work."
Trevino worked hard on his game, but that is not all. I've read stories of him before his days on the Tour showing up for a match with no money in his pocket and making lots of bets. You want to talk about pressure! Well, that is how you simulate the pressure of a golf tournament. You have to repeatedly put yourself in the position where something is on the line when you stand up to the tee on the 18th hole, or you are faced with that all important 6 foot putt. If you never do that with yourself, you will never learn how to deal with the pressure that just comes from playing in the 3rd flight in your club championship!
I find it very interesting that you find very few, if any, books written about the mental game by any top player. Sure, there are books that SPECULATE about how Tiger Woods' developed his mental toughness, but he has never written about the topic himself. The same may be said about Jack Nicklaus who is arguably Tiger's equal in terms of mental toughness.
On the other hand, there are huge numbers of books written about the golf swing, putting or short game. The fact is, none of these players worry about the mental game. Instead, they focus on executing their swing as best they can, not on some mental tip that suddenly transforms them into a totally relaxed player!
Gaining confidence to perform under pressure is simply a progression. I remember as a teenager, I was a pretty good golfer, playing to a 2 handicap by the time I was 16. I had won a few small junior golf tournaments. But, every time I would play in the men's club championship at my club, I would play poorly, usually averaging over 80 for two rounds.
Finally, when I was 18, I broke through. That summer I stepped up my game to play well against more experienced players. In one tournament, a better ball of partners format, we were down two shots with one hole to play, a 550 yard par 5. This was back n 1984. I've always been a long hitter, so even playing with a persimmon driver, I could reach the green in two. However, on this occasion, it was playing into a little bit of wind. I hit a decent drive, leaving myself about 260-270 yards from the green. I pulled out driver and hit it from the fairway, best shot of my life. It rolled up to about 25 feet to the right of the pin. I was nervous as could be standing over the putt, but I knocked it in for the eagle! Unfortunately, my opponent knocked in a 15 footer on top of me for birdie, and he and his partner won by a shot.
A few weeks later in our club championship, I shot rounds of 74-68 to finish in a tie for first, and lost in a playoff. Now, I knew how to play a great round under pressure to have a chance at winning.
So, you see, gaining this confidence is not something that happens over night. You can learn all the mental tips you want, but if you have a flawed golf swing and no confidence in the ability of that swing to hold up under pressure, you simply won't perform.
If you really want to improve your scores, improve your golf swing and work hard on your putting and short game. Also, play as often as possible, and play with a little something on the line! That is how you will learn to lower your scores!
