The pH of your lawn soil is an important factor that affects how your lawn grasses will grow. The pH value is an indicator that tells you whether your soil is acidic or alkaline. A balanced soil pH will ensure that your grasses are growing optimally.
First of all, you need to do a soil test to find out the pH value. You can do this in two ways. The first is to buy a do-it-yourself soil pH test kit at any nursery near you and follow the instructions provided by the kit. The result is not highly reliable but it is enough to give you an approximate pH value.
The other way is to let a soil test lab do the test for you. Obviously this is more expensive than the first option but the result is much more complete and reliable. Moreover, the lab result often contains much more information about your soil and not just the pH value. A good lab report will also advise you the remedial action to take if the test reveal any potential problems with your lawn.
The pH scale range from 1 to 14 with a pH of 1 being most acidic and a pH of 14 being the most alkaline. A neutral pH value is 7.0 but most lawn grass will thrive in slightly acidic soil which has a pH value of 6.5 to 7.0.
If your soil has a pH value under 6.5, it is too acidic and you have to add ground limestone to bring it back into balance. If it is over 7.5, it is alkaline and you have to add soil sulfur.
To find out how much sulfur or limestone you need to add to your soil, obtain a soil chart from any soil laboratory, lawn and gardening centers or cooperative extension offices. The scale is usually based on pounds of material to add per 1,000 square feet. Thus it is imperative that you know the size of your lawn. If you have not done so, measure your lawn's length and width with a measuring tape. Multiply the two figures to get the square footage of your lawn.
Once you know the amount of sulfur or limestone required, use a drop spreader to apply these materials. A drop spreader is not expensive and will help your spread the materials evenly on your lawn. It can also be used to spread fertilizers. So invest in one if you have not done so.
You may have to apply sulfur or limestone on a regular basis in order to keep your soil pH in balance. Sometimes, applying both sulfur and limestone may be necessary. However, do exercise caution when applying sulfur as too much of it can burn your lawn. Break up the sulfur application over a few parts and apply them evenly will ensure that you have a pH balanced lawn for your grasses to thrive.

This is essentially starvation. Your body needs a certain number of calories just to cover your basal metabolic rate (BMR) in order to function. This does NOT include daily activities, or intentional exercise. This number (usually you can hit the ballpark if you just take your weight and multiply it by 1000, or just add a zero to your weight in pounds, ex: if you weigh 120, then you should consume 1200 calories just to cover your BMR) is an indication of how much you should consume, just to cover living, breathing, or sitting on the couch. This is for basic human function. Eating has a thermic affect on the body.
If you choose to eat less, you will lose weight, but there are some other information you need arm yourself with in order to make sure it's the kind of weight you seek to lose. Here's what I mean.
If the scale says you weigh less, that does NOT necessarily mean you are doing the right thing.
Here's why.....
THE TRUTH: Eat less weigh less does 3 things:
1. You lose water.
2. You lose very little fat.
3. You lose lots of muscle.
Let me explain further.....
When starving several things happen:
- Your body goes for the metabolically active tissue - muscle.
- It goes into survival mode, and the way it survives is by eating your muscle--it stores fat because that's how it can survive the longest. Your remarkable body doesn't know that fat loss is your goal or what you're trying to do so it seeks for the way it will preserve itself the longest. It wants to help you survive your self-imposed starvation.
- In the meantime, your body continually catabolizes itself (muscle).
- If muscle is eliminated, then it can survive on fewer calories, preserving itself.
- Low-cal diets have no real lifetime affect-it makes you worse off in the long run. It catabolizes your muscle until your brain decides that you will provide it with the necessary nutrition it needs in order to stop feeding on your precious muscle.
- Your body goes into an unhealthy state, driving you to the quickest energy nutrients it needs to survive: FAT & SUGAR! This is a vicious cycle. Your job is to take yourself out of this cycle by first stop starving yourself, and second, ELIMINATE THE SUGAR!
Muscle is good!
o The scale cannot differentiate between fat, muscle, bone, water, the last meal you just ate, clothing, or your internal organs - it simply sums it all up and gives you the grand total. It is how much gravity is pulling on your body at that point and time. The method that gives you the most information is a body caliper test, or body fat test which determines your body fat percentage. This gives you the percentage of fat you have on your body so you can figure out your lean muscle mass. A healthy range for a woman would be between 18 - 23%, Men are between 12 - 15%. You want this number to be low, but your lean body mass (LBM) to be high. You want your body composed of as much LBM as possible.
o Muscle does not weigh more than fat. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. The difference is that muscle takes up far less space on the body than fat and is far more appealing than a pound of fat on your body.
o If you lose weight and the weight loss is primarily muscle, the "loss" will be short lived and unhealthy, provided that your goal is to maintain muscle which is the only site where fat can be burned from your body.
o If seeing the # rise on the scale is stressful to you, get rid of the scale. The muscle that you are working to feed and build will begin to do it's job by burning off the fat on your body. Build the muscle first! Then watch as the fat seems to effortlessly melt from your body.

A biology laboratory at your university is studying the location of a person's center of gravity as a function of her or his body weight. They pay well and you decide to volunteer. The location of your center of gravity when standing erect is to be determined by having you lie on a uniform board (mass of 5.00 kg, length 2.00 m) supported by two scales, as shown in the figure. If your height is 190 cm and the left scale reads 430 N while the right scale reads 355 N, where is your center of gravity relative to your feet? Assume the scales are both exactly the same distance from the two ends of the board, are separated by 176 cm, and are set to each read zero before you get on the platform.

weight difference?
does anyone know what kind of scale is more accurate? upstairs we have a digital scale that you just step on and the weight appears digitally, downstairs we have one that you step on and you have to move it so the little bubble is balanced in the middle..the one upstairs, i can step on and off of it, and then do it again and it can change anywhere from 1-6 pounds, the downstairs one doesnt really seem to change much, im just wondering which one really is the most accurate to use

Do you need postage weighing scales. If you answered no you may want to take a step back for a second and think about what you are doing. If you are new to a weight loss program you might be wondering if you really need to count calories for weight loss. The truth is yes if you want to see fast results. This article will explain the reasons why and to help clear up the confusion.
The real secret to weight loss is energy balance. If you consume less calories than you burn you will lose weight. If you consume more calories than you burn you will gain weight. It is that simple.
If you are not counting calories you are merely guessing. That is fine if you have a lot of time on your hands but if you want quick results I would recommend that you keep track of your daily caloric intake.
At first it can seem like a drag but if you really think about it most of us eat relatively the same foods each day. If you keep a nutritional journal and take a little time to tabulate the amount of calories for the foods you eat you can get the majority of the work out of the way.
Everything you need to know is usually listed on the food items you buy. If not there are plenty of free calorie counter charts online that will contain all of the information you need.
You do not have to be a perfectionist when it comes to tabulating your calories. No one will be able to get it perfect right down to the exact calorie amount. You are merely looking for a ballpark figure and something you can use as a gauge.
But what about portions you may ask? Although this may seem convenient at first it is still a crude way of measuring what you are eating. If you have enough experience you might be able to do it. Some advanced dieters do not count calories at all. It really depends on how well you know your own body.
What is the the formula for determining how many calories you need? There are a few formulas which I will list for you. Some are more detailed than others and will require more information from you.
These are the main ones:
- The Harris-Benedict Formula
- The Katch-McArdle Formula
Each formula can easily be found online. Personally I will just record what I am eating and drinking for 3 days and then average it out. That will give me the precise amount of calories I need to maintain my weight providing I am not gaining or losing.
The next thing you want to do is create a calorie deficit. That is what will make you actually lose weight. There are many ways to do this also but from my research I have come to the conclusion that using percentages is the most accurate.
You only want to drop your calories by 15-20%. The rest you will make up with exercise. There are approximately 3500 calories in one pound of fat. That is how many calories you need to burn if you want to start losing fat at a steady rate.
I hope this article has shown you that counting calories for weight loss doesn't need to be that hard. It just takes a little bit of effort in the beginning. But trust me, those efforts will pay off!

how do i manage my weight without exercise or calorie counting?
I am 15 years old male and am 5ft 5inches and weigh about 130 pounds, i was wondering how i can maintain a healthy weight without exercise or calorie counting, will a balance of healthy foods help prevent too much weight gain, obviously i need to grow taller so i obviously need a lot of energy, thanks
how about paul mckenna's i can make you thin.... it does work and yet its so easy...
just follow simple rules..
1.eat when you are hungry (when your actually hungry, not cos u are bored or upset)
2.Stop when you are full (when you are starting to feel satisfied, stop eating as it takes 10 minutes for your food to hit your stomach. so if you continue eating for 10 mins after feeling satisfied, you are gonna feel stuffed and bloated by the end)
3.eat consciously (sounds obvious but alot of people just shove food down their necks as quick as possible without actually realising it. you need to be aware of how you are eating. put your knife and fork down inbetween mouthfuls and chew every mouthful. you begin to enjoy some foods more and others less purely down to taste and texture. try counting 20 chews per every mouthful, after a while it becomes natural)
4. eat what you want, not what you think you should. (if you tell yourself you can't have something then it is gonna make you want it more. that way if you do eat something you think you shouldnt you won't have to punish yourself by eating more like some people do!)
if you mess this up then don't worry about it, just try it again with your next meal. its not a diet its a life style. its how thin people eat!
also if you feel hungry, drink water inbetween. 90% of the time our body misinterprets thirst as hunger. also have a drink with your meal.
try leaving a little bit of food on your plate. as its not a crime. and try smaller portions. if you are still hungry after you finish then get something else to eat.
don't count calories with this or weigh yourself for atleast the first 2 weeks as you can put on pounds and take them off due to many factors... and counting calories would defy the rule of eating what you wanted!
also try doing at least 30 mins of moderate exercise a day.... like a brisk walk into town or to a park or something.... its just good for your body as it will keep it functioning better.
you will lose weight without the exercise part by following the rules, but personally i think just 30 mins a day is nothing..... and it doesn't have to be a tough workout, just light exercise!
