A novel vibration damper concept for use in high-speed rotating machinery has been conceived and evaluated. The novel concept is coming as a complementary damping mean to any kind of the existing rotor system stability source on the machine.
Unlike other development in this field that includes just one damping principle, this approach is based on two principles mixed into the same unit: i) the principle of a dynamic vibration absorber and ii) the principle of a "stick" phenomenon that appears in dry-friction between two surfaces in a each other relative motion.
Therefore, in principal, the damper is a bearing-carrier that realize improving of the rotor dynamics: 1) by tuning the dynamic features of the damper (mass, stiffness) to the rotor features - resulting a restoring force and 2) by dissipating the rotor energy using a predetermined "stick" friction - that increases efficiency and enlarges the action area. An above depicted bearing-carrier vibration damper was specially designed to be proper for testing on the Bently Nevada Rotor-Kit. The experimental evidence proved the feasibility of the concept and quantified the damping effect showing large reduction in pick vibration at the critical speeds as well as in the magnitude of the resultant forces transmitted from the rotor to the stator.
Conclusions
A bearing-carrier vibration damper holds out the following benefits:
- provides a soft running to the rotor and implicitly to the machinery;
- sets rotor apart from the external mechanical transmitted perturbations;
- is independent of the running agent sources;
- is complementary to any kind of damping;
- is suitable to be used with any kind of rotor bearing system;
- provides certain self-alignment capability; supports High Temperature; constructively is very simple.

Car Trouble?
Ok I don't know if it's all in my head but when I apply the breaks I hear this weird noise coming from the back. It sounds like a bucket full of water knocking over (i'm not making this up). I have nothing in the trunk but a box and the spare tire. Can it be the back back rotors perhaps or something underneath?
Depending on your car make you should have drum brakes in the back. Sometimes on older cars water can leak into the drums and will make a swishing sound at times, but this is rare.
Another thing is you may have a hole somewhere where rain water or when you go to the car wash water is getting in the body somewhere. If you do have a place in the trunk for a spare. Check this place out and make sure it isnt full of water where your trunk might have leaked.
Also dont only notice the sound when you stop. Also try feeling to see if your car acts different when this sound occurs. Like does it grind or pull to the right or left. Does it hesitate to stop or stop to suddenly.
Another thing you could try is find a good size hill. Park your car up the hill get out and see if you see any water coming from the rear. Also park it down the hill and do the same thing. You can as well place your hands ontop the trunk over each shock and press down hard 2 or 3 times and see what you hear or how the car acts.
